Native IP Technology

NetStar's iDirect Broadband Satellite Services use native IP which saves you 10 - 50% capacity verses an inefficient MPEG Encapsulation scheme. Unlike broadband satellite Internet services that were adapted from television broadcast technology, NetStar Technologies' iDirect Broadband Satellite Services were built from the ground up for IP services. Using satellite for transmitting TCP/IP has traditionally been less than ideal due primarily to issues involving the distance the data must travel over the satellite link, as well as problems relating to rain fade.

In previous IETF and IEEE publications, there are several techniques suggested for accelerating TCP over satellite communications. The inherent delay caused by the satellite being 35,786 km from Earth must be compensated for if the end-user wants to receive better-than-phone modem performance. iDirect Technologies has implemented the most reliable techniques directly into the NetModem broadband router to provide users with the highest performance possible. These techniques start with accelerating the connection set-up that eliminates the typical one-second delay seen when starting a TCP/IP session over a satellite link. This greatly improves the user’s experience, particularly when using based applications. By utilizing a split connection instead of spoofing, iDirect is able to use a highly efficient and reliable link layer protocol providing further speed, control and bandwidth utilization improvements. The overall effect is that the TCP session is accelerated, providing terrestrial line performance or better. In addition, by utilising the latest forward error correction techniques to mitigate effects of distance and atmospheric conditions, NetStar's iDirect Broadband Satellite Service deliver the most reliable (99.9 percent availability) satellite link with a fiber-like quality of 10(-9) Bit Error Rate (BER). This is made possible by the implementation of turbo product codes (TPC) bi-directionally on the satellite broadband router. This advanced technology is embedded in the iDirect hardware and provides the most reliable and effective error correction available today.

DVB Technology

NetStar Technologies offers Internet service providers (ISPs) and enterprises a cost-effective, direct connection to the Internet backbone over global satellites using the DVB/IP standard, which routes Internet protocol (IP) over a digital video broadcasting (DVB) satellite transmission path. Here's how it works:

  • At a PanAmSat teleport linked directly to the Internet, the IP gateway encapsulates IP traffic onto a DVB transport stream and relays the data to a PanAmSat satellite.
  • The satellite transmits the data to your POP through either a receive-only antenna or a two-way antenna.
  • A DVB receiver extracts your IP traffic from the signal and routes it to end-users.
Key features include:
  • Guaranteed minimum constant bit rate (CBR)
  • Support for multiple points-of-presence (POPs)
  • DVB/IP standard with BGP-4 routing
  • Low-cost, easy-to-install equipment
  • 24 x 7 x 365 customer service

Burstable Services

Burstable Service allows customers to take advantage of additional satellite bandwidth that may be available when their usage demands are high and their network services may be negatively affected. With Burstable Service, eligible customers are provided an additional burstable bit rate above and beyond the their guaranteed constant bit rate when unused bandwidth is available on the satellite. Customers still will be guaranteed their minimum constant bit rate but may burst above this when the capacity is available. Features and benefits of Burstable Service include:

  • Improved network performance during periods of high usage
  • Purchase only the capacity you need
  • Payment model will match your usage profile
Burstable Service may not be available on all platforms. Contact NetStar Technologies Sales at (361) 578-6387 to check for the availability of Burstable Service.

Internet Trunking Services

NetStar Technologies provides direct access to the Internet backbone via satellite for Internet service providers (ISPs) and enterprises virtually anywhere in the world. Our service is ideal in regions that can't access terrestrial networks because it offers a two-way (duplex) satellite connection to the Internet backbone. Internet Trunking features include:

  • Full duplex connectivity with asymmetric configurations designed to transport up to 4 times the data from the Internet backbone to your subscribers
  • Simplex connectivity through Forward Only service for those with terrestrial alternatives
  • Important middle-mile connections to upgrade services and extend service reach
  • Asymmetrical bandwidth connections that allow bit rates to increase quickly as needs grow
  • Tier 1 Internet backbone direct access
  • Multi-homed service with fully redundant access through multiple connectivity to Tier 1 ISPs
  • Routing that can be configured to either static or dynamic depending upon network architecture.
  • Burst availability to supplement bandwidth requirements
NetStar's Broadband Satellite Service allows for Internet connections specifically engineered to match actual bandwidth requirements. Because most Internet content is located inside the United States, international ISPs typically receive much more data than they send, and the data rates of both the incoming and outgoing satellite link can be set to match the actual traffic patterns of your network. This type of configuration allows the ISP to operate more efficiently by leasing the exact amount of capacity required in each direction, thereby reducing overall circuit and hardware costs.
